Forest Bio-energy Initiative
Purpose:
There is increasing interest locally, nationally and internationally in alternative energy sources, as well as new markets for forest products. Wood biomass has the potential to be a sustainable, renewable energy source that will reflect positive change to Island forests and rural communities.
Description:
The project started out doing general research into biomass to get up to speed on the current terminology and to find out what was going on in the industry locally and globally. It soon became evident that biomass research is on the threshold of advancements that, coupled with the eminent rise in price of fossil fuels, have the potential to put this natural resource very much in demand.
Objectives:
- Review current molded estimates of available forest biomass prepared by DEEF with 2000 inventory data.
- Monitor the development of protocols for the establishment of carbon credits from forest management activities.
- Prepare biomass harvest operating plans. In preperation, consideration will be given to a) current BMP harvest guidlines b)the effect on bidiversity and the identification of areas of concerns c) types of equipment currently available on PEI d )implications, both positive & negative imposed by adherence to the PEI Eco manual.
- field tours to demonstrate the above
